Fly Fishing: Tarpon Season

November 29th, 2007 by Wogo

Today’s film comes from Captain Will Benson, a guide based in the Florida Keys who specializes in Tarpon and Permit.

Living in the Keys as a young boy, Will has spent a lifetime connected to the water. What began with cleaning boats to earn gas money when he was 11 years old, has matured into a “250 days a year on the water” guide schedule.

Will became a professional fishing guide in 1999 at the age of 19. After Graduating from Loyola University in New Orleans with a degree in philosophy, he moved back home to pursue guiding full time. Intrigued by the emerging popularity of documentary style independent films, Will set out to film and create a new genre of saltwater fly fishing video; one that illustrated the difficulty, the inherent beauty and the comedic elements of the sport.

From Will:
“This film is a portion of a larger work tilted Tarpon Season. What began with me using a camera to help people visualize their cast quickly turned into a personal quest to capture the “purest” moments in saltwater fly fishing. Using very unsophisticated camera equipment, I began to tackle the issues associated with shooting in a saltwater environment. After many long days guiding on the water and late nights behind the computer, I finally produced my first film.

“I always wanted to make a fishing highlight reel to Jimi Hendrix’s ‘All Along the Watchtower,’ so I produced Tarpon Season and sent it out to all my clients as a Christmas present. I had no Idea it was going to be as popular as it turned out.

I want people to be excited about fly fishing. I want people to see the real anglers who are out there every season testing their limits, and I want to say thank you to the many patient clients who have made this possible.”
