Silver Screen: Steep

December 20th, 2007 by Chad Jackson

Ski and snowboard films have become a staple for most mountain towners. These films are a way for people to get fired up about the ski season and to inspire them to get after it. They are visual works of art with music that stir the emotions and showcase the progression of the sports. They are, well…sick! Unfortunately, many of the films lack much of a storyline. There is nothing wrong with a hard-hitting film that shows the best of the best. I love them, but it seems that these mountain towners have been looking for a little bit more lately.

Introducing the progression of ski and snowboard films, “Steep” is a feature documentary about big mountain skiing and the risks involved with the adventure. This high-end ski film premieres tomorrow, Friday Dec. 21 at MovieWorks in Jackson and will hopefully be that next level.

You can see it here in Jackson as well as Aspen, Salt Lake, New York City and a handful of other cities. This film claims to follow in the footsteps of other great documentaries like “Riding Giants” and “Dogtown and Z Boys.” We shall see.

If anything this is only the beginning of the progression of a new wave of entertainment for skiers and beyond. I hear there is another film for the big screen in the works that is sure to tell one of the best stories in skiing; the legend of the Jackson Hole Air Force called “Swift. Silent. Deep.”
