March Nature News by Cathy Shill

Photo Courtesy The Buffalo Field Campaign. These 13 bison were hazed for two hours and 20 minutes from HWY 287, across HWY 191 and into the Duck Creek Trap on March 5, 2008. They were shipped to slaughter the next morning.

The slaughter of Bison outside of Yellowstone National Park has been a hot topic this month. The bison historically leave the park in search of lower elevation, which offer more forage with less snow. The Montana Department of Livestock doesn’t want brucellosis (an infectious disease transmitted by a bacteria, genus Brucella) transmitted to cattle, so the bison who wander outside their boundaries are corralled and sent to slaughter. Powder to the Peaceful

The Poster

Michael Franti and Spearhead will play a free concert Saturday at Teton Village, beginning at 5 p.m. His is just one of many performances (see: New Orleans’ The Radiators), giveaways and other events (like mechanical bull riding) featured at the second Annual Jackson Hole Mountain Festival.

Following a weekend of skiing pow and jamming out, JH Underground, in partnership with the Art Association and Center for the Arts, will screen Franti’s documentary “I Know I’m Not Alone.” The show starts at 7 p.m. Monday at the Center.

Franti and a group of friends traveled to Baghdad in 2004 armed only with video cameras and his guitar. “I Know I’m Not Alone” is the story of Franti’s travels through the war zones of Iraq, Israel and Palestine, where through the power of music he connected with people on all sides.

Admission is $10, and proceeds will benefit the Middle East Children’s Alliance, a charity Franti supports that is working to make peace in the region.

This weekend in Jackson Hole, you can have it all: ski films, music concerts, record-breaking snowfall, manly machines and a heartfelt message about war, peace and music.

Liam Devenny is a street fiddle player in Jackson Hole. He also powder skis, often in his kilt.

I Pedestrian, Part 2

Posted by David J. Swift on March 25th, 2008

I was a child pyromaniac. The shocked expression on my mother’s face, as she asked about the blackened portion of our pink stucco garage, drove home the fact that happy dancing fire also destroyed things. Shoot. Destruction is such an unfortunate byproduct of Gaia-based thrills. Read More »

The Rope Gun of the future!

Posted by Scotty Wood on March 25th, 2008

It seems that the big brains down at Stanford University in California are building the next generation rope gun. A robot that gently balances it weight between it legs and arms to nail the crux of the climb! The thought is that technology like this might someday allow a robot to scale the cliffs on mars to reveal new things about planet. But who knows? Maybe the next time you and your friends are arguing who is going to lead that nasty off-width, you might turn to your good friend “Capuchin” to settle the matter.

Posted by shult on March 20th, 2008

SPRING!!!!!!The Vernal Equinox is today. What does that mean? I don’t exactly know, but I think it means that despite the fact it’s snowing outside, it’s officially spring. Good news because the new spring product is up and available at Cloudveil.com. To find out the latest and greatest I did a quick survey of the Cloudveil staff: What product tops your list of spring purchases you’ll be making for yourself?

The Winners:
For the ladies…
Pearl Street Roller Short: Roll ‘em up, wear them down…you’ve got options with this 100% organic cotton short.
Track Jacket: Stretchy, breathable comfort in this very non-’80s track jacket.
Run Don’t Walk Performance Hoodie: A sporty, wicking top with roll over cuffs and a scuba hoodie – it doubles as a cat suit.

And the men…
8x Pro Jacket: Made of Gore-Tex Pro Shell fabric, fishing jackets don’t get any better than this.
Wilson Jeans: 100% organic cotton. dark denim rough tough. Wow, Cloudveil makes jeans!
Cool Print Shirt: UPF 45 short sleeve wicking shirt that some might actually call stylish.

Check it out and happy spring everyone!
