Some mountain town residents are skiing powder in sun today, some are in Casper, Wyo. listening to two presidential candidates’ shpeals. For those that are stuck in front a computer, enjoy this video by former Telluride filmmaker TM Faversham. You may have seen it before, but somehow it never gets old. Maybe because we’ve all been there. …
Ice climbing made me the winter pedestrian that I am today. A bold, crisp stride. Properly dressed for conditions. A tad reckless when ambling among the migrating machines of Jackson Hole’s bustling Highway 89.
I recently shot some video of a Denver Climbing League event and I thought I’d post it here on the mountain culture.
The DCL is the longest-running youth climbing series in the entire country, and has served as a springboard for dozens of successful climbers including Tommy Caldwell,Daniel Woods and myself… among many others. While it is run as a competitive series, the main goal is improvement and enjoyment of climbing. I love attending these events because it is really cool to see hundreds of climbers and their supporters all come together under one roof. This video captures some of the action in the elite category of the girls division … where every competition is a toss up among several likely winners. Thanks and Enjoy!
The competition was fierce and there were a surprising number of entrants, but when the dust settled, Michael H. from Denver smoked the competition with a whopping score of 448.
And for his winning prize, the gentleman choose to receive the Women’s Track Jacket for his wife. Congrats Michael!
Now seeing that we had so many entrants, we decided to send an Organic Cotton t-shirt to the 3 runner up Whackers.
2nd place was Matthew C. from Grand Junction, CO with a score of 287
3rd place was David G. from Denver, CO with a score of 282
and 4th place goes to Eric W. who didn’t leave an address, with a score of 263
Twenty years after the first beer took air at the site of the original Bear Claw Café, aprés ski spirit lived on again at the base of the mountain.
On February 27, 2008, Cloudveil’s inaugural Gelande Quaff World Championships at the Village Café couldn’t have been scripted any better. With a cross-section of teams from Jackson Hole and the National ski community, the unprecedented event reminded everyone of ski culture’s colorful past.
Sixteen teams in heated head-to-head competition led to a poetic finale as the Jackson Hole Ski Patrol faced off with the Village Café team.
After two minutes of freestyle Gelande Quaffing, the crowd erupted as a ski boot full of Big Sky Brewing’s Trout Slayer Ale took air and was downed by the VC’s John Verdon seconds before the end of the round.
The Village Café team of Reese Edwards, Johnny Recchio, Cody McIness, John Verdon and coach Dom Gagliardi embodied the renegade spirit of the original Jackson Hole Air Force, whose founders Captain Benny Wilson and Howie Hollywood Hendersen judged each round with nostalgic scrutiny. Thanks to all who embraced aprés ski spirit and showed just how much fun it is to celebrate after a day on the hill. - JK
Our friend Greg Epstein was there snapping shutters and captured the spirit of the event: Click Here for his slideshow.
David Gonzales at The Snaz was there shooting too. Click Here for his video.
A certain Jackson Hole badass, athlete, filmmaker with a hard-to-pronounce last name showed this trailer before Cloudveil’s first Gelande Quaffing competition at the Winter Outdoor Retailer show. Now, here it is for the world to see. Full movie coming Fall 2008.
