5Point Film Festival Wrapup
The inaugural 5Point Film Festival wrapped up this past weekend with a standing room only crowd at the new Carbondale Recreation Center. Thanks to founder Julie Kennedy’s massive connections in the outdoor industry, heavy hitters in attendance included Yvon Chouinard, Gerry Lopez, and Erik Weihenmayer, as well as local boys Lou Dawson, Chris Klug and Aron Ralston.
Keeping in step with Julie’s original vision of “living passionately with a conscience,” film weren’t solely adventure porn, but contained messages of the five guiding principles of 5Point: respect, commitment, humility, purpose and balance.
1) Best Action Film - King Lines
2) Best Inspiring Adventure - Ain’t Got No Friends On A Powder Day
3) Best Cinematography - Seasons
4) Best of Festival - Patagonia
5) People’s Choice - King Lines
Runner Up - The Endless Knot
Jury Prize - The Grasshopper/Mountain Town
A few highlights:
King Lines: This feature-length film about Chris Sharma follows him on his various climbing journeys. While Chris sends killer routes, this film also shows the inner side of Chris, and how his upbringing and relationship with his parents created the climbing master.
Erik Weihenmayer Presentation: If you’ve never seen Erik speak, find his next event and go! As the first blind person to climb Mt. Everest, Erik’s story is remarkable and inspiring. A new project called BrainPort is a short film featuring a breakthrough technology for the blind.
Sliding Liberia: What do you get when you combine a peacekeeping surfer and a war-torn African town with one body board? A moving documentary about hope and community. Filmmakers Britton Caillouette and Nicholai Lidow do a fantastic job with both the social message and the surf footage.
