Critical Mass Halloween!

Posted by Shane Lindsay on October 30th, 2008

As our favorite ghastly ghoul of a holiday rapidly approaches, and everyone here in Jackson is scrambling to find that final perfect costume accessory, news is spreading about a new vehicle to show off your creativity and hard work. … YOUR BIKE!

Jackson’s newly formed Critical Mass is becoming the Critically Costumed Mass for Halloween, and you’re all invited. It starts early - tomorrow at 5 p.m. - so don’t worry about missing any of the other fun events happening that night. Just throw on your costume a bit early, and wheelie your bike over to the base of Snow King (carefully, so you don’t get your cape stuck in your wheel).

I’m sure most of you have seen or heard of the group of bicyclers parading down our streets on the last Friday of the month for the last few. You probably didn’t think anything of it, because well anything goes in Jackson Hole.

Believe it or not, these bikers were on a mission: to spread the word about how wonderful bicycling is and how much better it is than driving. We call this procession of two-wheeled patriots CRITICAL MASS.

Only newly seeded in Jackson, this monthly event has been spreading throughout cities worldwide for over 16 years promoting cyclist rights and overall enjoyment of riding. The informal events are meant celebrate cycling and promote it; and hopefully those that see people riding in a group will be inspired to get out of their cars and on to their bikes.

Bringing the Critical Mass to Jackson was the brain-child of Matt Berube, perhaps better known as Matty B, local breakfast Burrito Genius at D.O.G. While escaping a bit of the frigid Jackson winter down in Wellington, New Zealand, he witnessed a Critical Mass event and was truly inspired. He knew other Jacksonites would be on-board to bring the event here.

The first Jackson ‘Mass’ was a spectacular success with about 40 riders. The ride took them from the base of Snow King straight into the midst of Friday night tourist traffic on the Town Square. They were greeted with an equal amount of confused looks, pointing fingers and ear-to-ear smiles. Riders took turns shouting to people to park their cars and grab bicycles! After several laps and an unexpected detour directly through Teton Thai, riders headed down Broadway and eventually rendezvous-ed at the Virginian for a drink to cap off the night.

So, join in tomorrow, Friday, Halloween, and start the night off right - in a costume on your bike.
